    Starting an African Cichlid Aquarium!!

    Post by crabby-girl on Fri 10 Apr 2009, 16:05

I was going to get rid of my Metriaclimia Greshakei but my boyfriend wants too keep him. (I think it's a male-I pretty sure we discovered that already) So were going to set up an African tank. He's housed with my JD's right now. He is growing alot faster than the JD's. There is also a rainbow shark and a do jo loach in with them. There all still fairly young.

Let's say a 55 gallon how many Africans is a good #, I will also put a do jo loach and possibly a shark in with them. Cam I really like your blue African....any ideas or advise... Idea Idea Question Question as you know I'm fairly new too the aggressive fish. Have the semi-aggressive down pat.
    lol!

Well, in keeping your Greshakei,..you would want to stick to
an all male tank,..mixing of Haps and Mbuna is risky,..in the
wild Mbuna are rock dwelling and hide in wait for young Haps
and it's lunch time, so, they by nature don't do well together.
you might try a Hap tank and keep only the Greshakei, but there
will allways be territorial disputes,..nothing serious "likely"
More importantly,..if going with Africans, stick to that and try
not to mix in any CA Cichlids in there. There are some Amazing
looking Haps available,..you can find some in trios relatively
cheap on Ebay,..i wouldn't go more than 8,..some may disagree
but aggression is decreased in numbers,..heres a couple of links
    to some,..
